[ This message is being posted as a bulletin to all Fox POP users. ] Dear Customer, You will have heard in the media about the introduction next year of content regulation by the Federal Government. This E-Mail is to inform you of some of the effects this legislation may have on you and your web sites. The changes come into effect on the 1st of January 2000. Any web page content published in Australia will now be covered by the same classification scheme as other media ie G, PG, M, MA, R, X. X rated material should not be published. R rated material may be published if the pages are protected by an authorisation system. The legislation will be enforced via two organisations. 1) The Internet Industries Association (IIA) code of practice will apply to all ISPs and all Content Providers. A Content Provider is any person or business who has a web page accessible from the internet. As our accounts allow our customers to have their own web sites, these regulations WILL APPLY TO YOUR PERSONAL web site. 2) The ABA (Australian Broadcasting Association) is charged with enforcing the legislation. This body is already responsible for regulating television and other media and will now be responsible for regulating internet sites. Prentice Internet and The University of Queensland will comply with the Broadcasting Services Act, the IIA Code of Practice and any requests from the ABA to remove web pages from our servers. All of these are required of us by law. * Queries on how material is classified should be referred to the ABA www.aba.gov.au * Guidelines on acceptable authorisation systems for R rated material are the responsibility of the ABA www.aba.gov.au * For a copy of the IIA Code of Practice for ISPs and Content Providers, see the IIA web site www.iia.net.au * For a copy of the amendments to the Broadcasting Services Act that introduce internet content regulation see http://scaleplus.law.gov.au/html/comact/10/6005/top.htm [Prentice Internet requests that customers do not publish either R or X rated material from our services and reserves the right to remove or request the removal of any page, regardless of its legal classification.] Wilber Williams Manager Prentice Internet
